Free screening of the documentary 'Women Laughing' followed by a conversation with co-director Liza Donnelly and Sara Thurber Sauers.
Liza Donnelly is coming to the Wexner Center for the Arts on Thursday, October 29, for a screening of Women Laughing, the documentary she co-directed. The film runs from 7 to 8:45 PM in the Film/Video Theater at 1871 N High St, and it's followed by a conversation between Donnelly and Sara Thurber Sauers.
Women Laughing (2025) traces the history and evolution of the single-panel cartoon from the 1920s to the present, told through the work of contemporary women cartoonists at The New Yorker. It draws on Donnelly's book Very Funny Ladies: The Women Cartoonists of The New Yorker (Prometheus, 2022), and follows her as she speaks, laughs, and draws with some of the magazine's most celebrated cartoonists, including Roz Chast, Emily Flake, and Sarah Akinterinwa.
Donnelly has drawn for The New Yorker for forty years and works as a writer, director, and award-winning cartoonist. She's also a Cultural Envoy for the US State Department; her TED talk "Drawing On Humor For Change" was translated into 42 languages and viewed over 1.5 million times. The screening is presented by Thurber House in partnership with Cartoon Crossroads Columbus and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. The conversation partner is Sara Thurber Sauers, a typographic designer and letterpress printer and granddaughter of cartoonist James Thurber.
