Free Halloween trick-or-treat tour for children in costume through the Ohio Statehouse, where they collect treats and learn about the Capitol.
The Ohio Statehouse is bringing back its Haunted Tours this October, and the Trick or Treat Tour is the one designed for kids. It runs on Friday, October 30, from 10 AM to 11 AM at 1 Capitol Square, and it's free.
If you've never done the Haunted Tours, here's the setup: they're a fall tradition that mixes history, hauntings, and Halloween inside the Statehouse. Conductors lead you through the dimly lit limestone corridors by oil lantern light. Along the way, you'll hear stories of the ghosts said to wander the halls—Abraham Lincoln in an unfinished dance with Kate Chase, daughter of former Ohio Governor Salmon P. Chase; a weeping lady in grey; and a green, ghostly president felled by an assassin's bullet.
Most Statehouse tours focus on history and civics, but deputy director of museum and education Dayna Jalkanen says this one offers a one-of-a-kind way to engage visitors. The Trick or Treat edition is the children's entry point: kids come in costume, collect treats at various stops, and learn about Ohio's Capitol as they go. It's a way to get the little ones into the building and walking the same halls as the ghosts, with a bit of candy to keep them moving.
