Stained-glass workshop with Kara Cullenen-O'Dea to create a red cardinal using the copper-foil method, for adults and ages 12 and up.
Kara Cullenen-O'Dea is leading a stained glass workshop at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens on Saturday, November 21, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The project is a red glass cardinal, and you'll be making it using the copper foil method, which is the standard way of wrapping each piece of glass in a thin strip of copper before soldering them together. All the tools and materials are provided, so you don't need to bring your own kit.
O'Dea is a Columbus native who's been working in stained glass for 15 years. She's known for leaning into vibrant colors and whimsical subjects, and she describes her work as pushing the medium out of its traditional settings and into modern decor. When she isn't teaching, she runs her own storefront, Good Dea Craft School, where she holds workshops across the city. Outside the studio, she spends her time hiking and kayaking all over the US.
The class is designed with adults in mind, though it's open to anyone 12 and older. Because you'll be working with glass and soldering tools, long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. It runs for three hours, which should give you plenty of time to get through the cutting, foiling, and soldering without having to rush.
