Free student scenes from Mozart, Offenbach, Lehár and Sondheim, opening with Verdi's 'Brindisi', directed by Skye Johnson.
Ohio State Opera Theatre is bringing its fall scenes program to Timashev Recital Hall this November, with two performances to choose from. The first is Friday, November 6, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM, and the second is Sunday, November 8, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM.
The program is titled A Toast to Opera!, and it does exactly what the title suggests: it pulls together a series of scenes from across the operatic repertoire. The whole thing is built around relationships—the highs, the lows, the triumphs, and the complications that come with them. It's not one single story, but a collection of moments that touch on different sides of that theme.
As for the music, the program reaches across a few different eras. You'll hear Mozart, Offenbach, Lehár, and Sondheim, and it opens with the Brindisi from Verdi's La Traviata—one of the most famous drinking songs in all of opera, which fits the Toast theme right from the start. It's a broad mix, so you'll get a good sense of how different composers handle the same kind of human drama.

On stage, the ensemble is made up of 18 Ohio State vocal students, with Ed Bak on piano and Skye Johnson directing. Since it's a student production, it's a chance to see a large group of young singers working through a wide range of material in one evening.
Both shows are free and open to the public, and you don't need a ticket to get in. The venue is Timashev Recital Hall, at 1900 College Rd in Columbus. If you can only make one, you've got the choice between a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon.
