Free student opera scenes from Verdi, Mozart, Offenbach, Lehár and Sondheim by the Ohio State Opera Theatre.
The Ohio State Opera Theatre brings its Fall Scenes program to Timashev Recital Hall on Friday, November 6, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. The show is called A Toast to Opera!, and it's free and open to the public, with no tickets required.
Rather than a full opera, the evening is a curated sequence of scenes pulled from across the repertoire. It opens with the famous 'Brindisi' from Verdi's La Traviata—the classic drinking song that gives the whole program its title—and from there it moves through works by Mozart, Offenbach, Lehár, and Sondheim. The scenes are threaded together around the highs, lows, triumphs, and complications of all kinds of relationships, so you'll hear a range of moods and eras in one sitting.
On stage is a mix of graduate and undergraduate vocal students from the university, with 18 singers in total making up the ensemble. Skye Johnson directs, and Ed Bak is at the piano. Because it's a student production, you're seeing these singers work through a variety of roles and styles in a single night, from the early classical lines of Mozart to the more modern sensibilities of Sondheim.
