Open-ended art-making session where visitors of all ages explore a monthly theme inspired by the museum's exhibitions using a wide range of materials.
Open Studio is running on Saturdays at The Studio at the Columbus Museum of Art, 480 East Broad Street, from 10 AM to 1 PM. It's a long-running program that goes all through the year—from January 3 to December 26—so if you miss one Saturday, there's always another one coming up. Just a heads-up: the first Saturday of every month is for members only.
The whole thing is built on a simple premise: creative thinking through material exploration. Each month, the studio sets a theme inspired by the museum's special exhibitions and the art on view, and you're encouraged to think and make like an artist. It's not a class with a set result you have to hit; it's more about stepping in and experimenting with whatever is on the table. People of all ages are welcome, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults.
One of the best parts is the range of materials they keep on hand. The sessions cover a lot of ground—3D work, mixed media, painting, sculpture, and fiber arts—so you can switch from painting to sculpture in the same session if you feel like it. If you're not sure where to start, the monthly theme gives you a place to lean on, but you're free to take it in your own direction. And if you're coming with someone who gets overwhelmed by crowds, there's a Quiet Hour from 10 AM to 11 AM, kept as a calmer time for anyone with sensory sensitivities.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Columbus and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

It's included with admission to the museum, and members get in for free. The studio is open every Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM, except for those first-Saturdays reserved for members.
