Opera masterclass concert in which Dr. Everett McCorvey, Principal Guest Conductor of Opera Columbus, demonstrates the techniques opera singers must master.
Opera Columbus is hosting a masterclass concert with Dr. Everett McCorvey on Thursday, November 12, at the Ohio Theatre, in Rehearsal Studio 1. McCorvey is the company's Principal Guest Conductor, and the evening is built around him pulling back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes techniques opera singers have to master. Instead of a standard performance, you'll see the work that goes into the singing—the coaching, the adjustments, and the technical breakdown of how a professional opera voice is actually put together.
Opera Columbus has been around since 1981 and is led by General Director and CEO Julia Noulin-Mérat. The company describes itself as redefining regional opera with world-class productions, and its slogan, "Make It Yours," is meant to reflect a commitment to community belonging. This masterclass fits that approach: it's less about the finished product and more about the process, letting you in on the part of the art that usually stays hidden in the rehearsal room.
The venue is the Ohio Theatre, the Official Theatre for the State of Ohio, run by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. It's a 2,791-seat historic house designed by Scottish-born architect Thomas W. Lamb, which opened in 1928 as a Loew's movie house. Anne Dornan, one of the first women to graduate from the Columbia School of Architecture, decorated the interior, spending about $1 million on art and furnishings. The theater was saved from demolition in 1969 by a citizen "Save the Ohio" campaign, and it now houses the Columbus Symphony, BalletMet, and Broadway in Columbus. This particular event is in Rehearsal Studio 1, which keeps it smaller and closer to the action than the main house.
