The Columbus Symphony presents its 75th Anniversary season with the world premiere of 'The Mysteries' by Gregory Spears, Davóne Tines performing 'ANTHEM', and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony.
The Columbus Symphony brings Mysteries, Anthems & Victories to the Ohio Theatre on October 23 and 24, 2026, at 7:30 PM. It's part of the orchestra's Masterworks series, which falls within its 75th Anniversary season.
The evening opens with the world premiere of The Mysteries, a newly commissioned work by American composer Gregory Spears, made possible by The Donald Harris Fund for New Compositions. Following that, bass-baritone Davóne Tines performs Concerto No. 2 'ANTHEM', a piece he created with composers Michael Schachter, Caroline Shaw, and Tyshawn Sorey, and poet Mahogany L. Browne. It reimagines the national anthem and other American songs; Alex Ross of The New Yorker has described Tines as "changing what it means to be a classical singer."
Music Director Rossen Milanov leads the orchestra throughout the night, and the program closes with Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, whose famous "fate" motif carries the music from the depths of despair toward a triumphal march. It's a broad spread for one night: a brand-new commission, a reimagining of American songs, and a late-Romantic symphony.
