Lecture by CMA curator Kaitlin Booher on photography and dance, followed by a live performance by Columbus Symphony Orchestra musicians.
Kaitlin Booher leads Mozart to Matisse | A Modern Stage: Photography, Dance, and Artistic Community at the Columbus Museum of Art on Saturday, January 16, 2027. It's a two-part afternoon: a lecture followed by a live performance by musicians from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
Booher is the museum's William and Sarah Ross Soter Associate Curator of Photography, and she's drawing the talk from Queer Constellations: Photographs from the Aronowitz Family Collection, which is on view at the museum. The lecture looks at how photography and writing shape the way we remember dance performance, and it centers on the artistic communities and collaborations that promoted and memorialized ballet in New York at midcentury. To build that case, she pulls from the work of photographers George Platt Lynes and Peter Hujar and the writing of Edwin Denby.
Once the talk wraps, the focus shifts from the page and the print to the room. Musicians from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra will perform live, bringing the musical side of that dance connection into the space. It's a good way to see the two halves of the afternoon—the historical context and the live sound—sit side by side.
