Adult-led workshop to create a Pysanky, a traditional Ukrainian egg ornament, using the open-flame candle technique.
Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is hosting a Ukrainian Egg Decorating workshop on Saturday, November 7, from 1 PM to 5 PM. The session takes place in the Wells Barn, and the focus is on making Pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian egg ornaments known for their intricate patterns.
It's not just about the decorating, though. Along with the hands-on part, you'll get into the history and cultural significance behind the craft, so you'll walk away knowing a bit more about where these patterns come from. The technique itself works with the open flame of a candle, and the finished pieces are decorated in rich winter tones—the kind of deep, seasonal colors that fit right in with November. All the supplies are provided, so you don't need to bring anything with you.
Nicole Tabit, the Adult Program Manager, leads the session. It's open to ages 10 and up, which means it works as a solo afternoon or as something to do with a younger family member. You'll spend the four hours learning the process and working through your own piece, and you take your finished egg home with you when you're done.
