A vibrant Mexican holiday celebration featuring live music, a parade with Aztec dancers, folkloric dances, a Catrina contest, art exhibitions, crafts vendors and activities for kids.
Latino Arts for Humanity brings the Day of the Dead Festival to Green Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM to 7 PM. It's a free event, and the whole day is open to all ages.
If you're not familiar with the holiday, Day of the Dead—or DĂa de los Muertos—is a Mexican tradition for honoring loved ones who have passed. A big part of that is the ofrenda: altars decorated with flowers, candles, and mementos. Latino Arts for Humanity stages the celebration here in Columbus much as it's done in Mexico, with grave decorations, traditional food, and offerings for the altars running alongside the live program.
The schedule is full. There's live music from local bands and musicians, a parade with Aztec dancers, and folkloric dances. A Catrina contest—the skeletal figure that's become the holiday's most famous symbol—sits alongside an art exhibition, crafts vendors, and activities for kids. Between the performances and the vendors, you'll find the ofrendas and the decorated graves that give the day its context.
