Columbus Symphony Masterworks concert with Rossen Milanov and Joshua Roman, featuring Missy Mazzoli's 'Orpheus Undone', Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 and Sibelius's Symphony No. 2.
The Columbus Symphony takes the stage at the Ohio Theatre on Friday, April 2, 2027, at 7:30 PM. It's one of twelve concerts in the 2026-27 Cardinal Health Masterworks Series, which runs from October 23, 2026, through April 30, 2027, as part of the symphony's 75th anniversary season. Music director Rossen Milanov is on the podium, and cellist Joshua Roman joins the orchestra for the center piece.
The program opens with Orpheus Undone, a suite from a ballet by American composer Missy Mazzoli that reimagines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. From there, the evening moves into Shostakovich's Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 107, which Roman will lead. It was written for and premiered by the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich, so it's a piece with a specific history behind it. The night closes with Sibelius's Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43, a work the composer called "a confession of the soul" and that, echoing Beethoven's Fifth, builds to a triumphant finish.
