Ohio State campus a cappella groups hold a 'Pitch Perfect'-inspired riff-off with costume contests at Threes Above High.
Ohio State's campus a cappella groups are taking over Threes Above High this Thursday, October 29, for a Pitch Perfect-inspired riff-off. It's part of Aca-tober, the annual gathering of the university's a cappella scene, and this year it's moving off-campus for the first time. Past editions have stayed on campus, but this one is at Threes Above High, 2203 N. High St. The bar's owner, Scott Ellsworth, said they're happy to support the campus community.
The night is built around that riff-off, which recreates the movie scene with each group taking a separate segment. On top of that, every group gets two songs of their own choosing, and the whole room comes together for a cover of "Dracula" by Tame Impala. Halloween festivities run alongside the music, including costume contests with prizes.
For context, Aca-tober is a pre-competition showcase before the groups head to the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella in February. Many of them compete, so the night is a rare chance for them to show what they've been working on and to bond across groups. It's a look at where they're at before the competition season really kicks in.
