Jazz string quartet led by Bradley Mellen, with Hans Utter on sitar, at the Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge in Short North.
Bradley Mellen Jazz String Quartet plays Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge on Friday, October 30. It's a morning set, running from 8:15 AM to 9:45 AM, so you'll be in and out before the workday really gets moving.
The lineup is Nathan Smith, Arkadiy Gips, Hans Utter, and Bradley Mellen. The format is a bit different from a standard group set: each member plays their own set, so you'll hear them as individuals as much as you'll hear them together. It's a good way to get a sense of who's who in the quartet.
One of those members, Hans Utter, brings a particular background to the table. He's a master sitar player and guitarist, a musician who works across jazz, rock, funk, R&B, electronic, and Middle Eastern music, and a disciple of Ustad Shujaat Khan. That sitar influence is something you don't run into every day in a Columbus jazz string quartet, and it's a good place to start if you're wondering what this group sounds like.
