A one-woman play by Rupert Holmes in which actress Michelle Azar plays Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and recounts her life's trials.
All Things Equal: The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg comes to the Southern Theatre on Tuesday, January 19, 2027. It's a one-woman show that puts Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg center stage, and the whole thing is handled by a single performer, Michelle Azar, who plays Ginsburg throughout.
The play is written by Rupert Holmes, a Tony Award winner who describes Ginsburg as a "true American original." He's the first person in Broadway history to win Tonys for Book, Music, and Lyrics, and he's also the man behind the Billboard number one "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)." He scripted all 55 episodes of AMC's Remember WENN and contributed to the Golden Globe-winning score of A Star Is Born. Holmes says he wrote the play after coming to marvel at Ginsburg's strength, tenacity, wit, and compassion.
As for the story, it's an intimate ninety-minute portrait. The framing is simple: Ginsburg welcomes a family friend into her chambers and recounts her life's trials. She talks about losing her mother the day before she graduated valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school; being one of only nine women studying law at Harvard while raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer; fighting for women's rights in the 1970s before all-male courts; and taking courageous stands for human rights on an increasingly politicized Supreme Court.
