Literary talk by historian Elizabeth Bond, author of 'The Writing Public', on participatory knowledge in Revolutionary France and social media.
Elizabeth Bond speaks at the Thurber Center on Thursday, February 11, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. The talk is part of the Aldus Society's literary series, which runs on the second Thursday of the month. The society describes itself as central Ohio's connection for book lovers, hosting free literary events and author talks each month and acting as an affiliate of the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies (FABS).
Bond is an associate professor of history at Ohio State and the author of The Writing Public: Participatory Knowledge Production in Enlightenment and Revolutionary France (Cornell University Press, 2021). In this talk, she draws parallels between the "participatory knowledge" shared in newspapers during the tumultuous years of Revolutionary France and the endless disputation on social media in our own age of polarization. It's the kind of connection that makes a history of 18th-century France feel relevant to the current moment, and if you've spent any time watching how arguments play out on X or Facebook, you'll recognize the pattern she's tracing.
