The Gig Cartel presents The Undertones with support from Jim Bob live at Tramshed.
The Undertones play Tramshed on Friday 13 November, with Jim Bob opening the night. It's a 50th Anniversary Show, which puts the whole thing into perspective: the band first came together in Derry, Northern Ireland, back in 1976, when five friends learned rock and roll from mail-order records, the few copies of NME that reached the city, and John Peel's BBC Radio One show.
By 1977 they were playing their own brand of three-chord pop-punk, influenced by Nuggets-type material and the Ramones. In 1978 they released the four-song EP Teenage Kicks on Terri Hooley's Good Vibrations label in Belfast; Peel played the title track twice in a row and later called it his all-time favourite. Fans and critics still rank their albums among the best punk records ever made, and the hits run from 'Get Over You' and 'Jimmy Jimmy' to 'My Perfect Cousin', 'You've Got My Number', 'Julie Ocean' and 'Wednesday Week'.
The original line-up split in 1983 after four studio albums, the O'Neill brothers went on to form That Petrol Emotion, and the band reconvened in 1999 with Paul McLoone replacing Feargal Sharkey. This Cardiff date is part of that 50th anniversary run, so it's a good time to catch them if you've never seen them live.
