The Beat perform live on their Dance Crazed Too UK Tour at TramShed, with special guests The Selecter and a DJ set from Rhoda Dakar.
The Beat are playing TramShed on Tuesday 27 October, part of their Dance Crazed Too UK tour. It's a full bill: the band is fronted by Dave Wakeling, with The Selecter, fronted by Pauline Black, as special guests and a DJ set from Rhoda Dakar. The Beat formed in 1979 as part of the 2-Tone movement, and Wakeling has been their vocalist, songwriter and guitarist throughout, writing the band's biggest hits from the 1980s.
They made an immediate mark with their debut single, a cover of the Smokey Robinson classic 'Tears of a Clown' on 2-Tone Records, which entered the UK charts at number six. Alongside contemporaries like The Specials, Madness and The Selecter, they became overnight sensations and released three studio albums between 1979 and 1983: I Just Can't Stop It, Wha'appen? and Special Beat Service. That period produced a long run of singles, including 'Mirror in the Bathroom', 'Best Friend', 'Can't Get Used to Losing You', 'Hands Off...She's Mine', 'Too Nice To Talk To', 'Drowning', 'Doors of Your Heart', 'Save It For Later', 'I Confess', 'Stand Down Margaret' and 'Twist and Crawl'.
