Rhys Warrington's drama about a Welsh farming community torn apart by tragedy as the villagers debate a planned memorial, with two possible endings decided by an audience vote.
Monument opens at the Sherman Theatre on 29 January, running through to 13 February. It's a world premiere by playwright Rhys Warrington, who makes his Royal Court debut with it, and it's a co-production between the Royal Court and the Sherman.
The play follows a Welsh farming community torn apart by tragedy, with the villagers gathering in a village hall to debate a planned memorial. The whole thing comes down to a choice: it closes with two possible endings decided by an audience vote, so the way it ends depends on the room you're in.
Warrington is one of the Sherman's Associate Artists, and this is his first main-stage production with them. He's also the recipient of the second Davidson PlayGC Bursary, supported by PlayGC Theatre Company and the Alan Davidson Foundation. The play didn't start here, though — it was first heard at the Royal Court's 2025 Open Submissions Festival before moving to the main stage. It's directed by Francesca Goodridge, who's taking over as the Sherman's Artistic Director.

The Cardiff run is part of the theatre's 2027 'Alive at the Sherman' season, Goodridge's first as Artistic Director, and the production is supported by the Colwinston Charitable Trust. Before it reaches us, it has a London run at the Royal Court Theatre from 3 December 2026 to 23 January 2027, so by the time it opens at the Sherman on 29 January, it'll have already played a few weeks in London.
