Echo & The Bunnymen perform live at Tramshed, Cardiff, continuing their legacy as post-punk and indie rock pioneers.
Echo & The Bunnymen play Tramshed on Monday 9 November, as part of SJM Concerts. It's a single-bill night, so the full set is theirs.
If you're coming to them through the records, the names that usually come up are Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here, Porcupine and Ocean Rain — the four they put out in the early eighties. They're eighties indie heroes whose songwriting haunted a generation of bedsits and student pads, and they've been back together since 1997, still fronted by Ian McCulloch. They're pioneers of post-punk and a major influence on a long list of iconic groups, among them Coldplay, The Killers, Garbage, The Flaming Lips and Hole.
That influence is a good way to place them: the moody, atmospheric side of indie rock that a lot of the big bands of the nineties and two-thousands took as a starting point. If you've never seen them live, this is a chance to hear that sound in the room rather than on a record.
