Mergaliyev Classical Ballet stages Swan Lake to Tchaikovsky's score with a live orchestra, stunning costumes and choreography at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.
Mergaliyev Classical Ballet bring Swan Lake to the Cambridge Corn Exchange on 30 and 31 December, two performances that sit right in the middle of the city's festive run. It's a production set to Tchaikovsky's original score, performed by a live orchestra rather than a recording, so you'll have the music playing in the room with the dancers.
The company behind it is a relatively new one, founded in 2023. They describe themselves as bringing together dancers from around the world, and they say the variety of backgrounds, training and styles they draw from adds a unique vibrancy to their work. It's a good way to frame it: a classic that everyone knows, but performed by a company that doesn't come from one single tradition. The production itself is built around the usual elements of the story — the costumes and the choreography bringing to life the tale of love, magic and tragedy that's made it a staple of the ballet.
These two dates are part of the Corn Exchange's Autumn/Winter season, which leans into festive favourites alongside nostalgic singalongs and festive comedy. If you're planning to go, there are a couple of practical things to keep in mind. Latecomers may not be admitted, so it's worth arriving with a bit of time to spare rather than cutting it fine. The box office opens at 6pm on performance days, which is handy if you need to collect tickets on the night.
