Stand-up show by climate scientist Matt Winning about fatherhood, finance and facing the future, directed by Ben Target.
Matt Winning brings his new show, Solastalgia, to Cambridge Junction on Friday 20 November. It's a stand-up comedy hour that starts with a bit of a pinch: Winning, an acclaimed climate scientist, is given an ultimatum to save the world by lunchtime tomorrow or sell his soul for a slice of Rockefeller's fortune. The show follows his day from there, and the range it covers is pretty wide — the birth of his son, karaoke with bankers, petrol station bathrooms and the United Nations. It's a story about fatherhood, finance and facing the future, told by someone who actually knows the science behind the headlines.
Winning is a climate scientist by trade — LLB, MSc, PhD — and he's made a career of bringing that world into the public eye. He hosts Net Zero: A Very British Problem on BBC Radio 4 and wrote the bestseller Hot Mess. Solastalgia is directed by Ben Target, a double Fringe First Award winner who, in a detail Winning makes sure to mention, is not a climate scientist himself.
This isn't Winning's first turn on the comedy circuit, either. He was shortlisted for the BBC Radio 2 New Comedy Award in 2012 and the Chortle Student Comedy Award in 2010 and 2011, when he performed in character as Steph E Graph. He's been a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe for years, with shows like Mugabe and Me (2015), Ragnarok (2016), Filibuster (2018), Climate Strange (2019) and Hot Mess (2022) all coming out of the festival. Solastalgia continues that thread, mixing the personal with the planetary.
