Historian Mary Beard returns to the stage to explore the lives of those left out of the history books and connect Roman politics to today.
Mary Beard is back on stage at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on Wednesday 4 November, her first live appearance since her sold-out tour in 2025. She's returning to the world of Ancient Rome with The Secret Histories of Ancient Rome, a talk that looks past the usual names and dates. Most of us know Rome through its emperors and its battles, but Beard is focusing on the people who rarely make it into the history books — the ones left out of the record. She'll be drawing connections between Roman politics and the world we're living in today, so it's less a dry history lesson and more of a conversation about how the past still speaks to the present.
It's a live event, and the second half gives you a chance to get involved: there's a Q&A where you can ask your own questions while she unpacks the history of Rome. The Cambridge date is part of a short tour that also stops at Hall for Cornwall in Truro, so this is one of only a few chances to catch it.

Tickets are £38 to £53, which includes the booking fee. The talk starts at 19:30 at the Corn Exchange on 2 Wheeler Street, and it's worth keeping in mind that latecomers may not be admitted, so it's best to be in your seat before it kicks off.
