Alternative stand-up Mark Thomas celebrates 40 years on stage with a new show of political and personal stand-up.
Mark Thomas is at Cambridge Junction on Sunday 22 November, with a new show that marks 40 years on stage. It's a night of political and personal stand-up, and as the title 40 In Stand Up Years suggests, it's as much about the four decades behind him as it is about the new material.
If you've come across his name but aren't sure where to place him, Thomas is an alternative comic who's spent those forty years doing things most stand-ups leave to the activists. He's won eight awards for performing and four more for his human rights work. On screen, he did six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product and three Dispatches for Channel 4, plus five series of The Manifesto for Radio 4. He's also written six books and five play scripts.
That's the professional side, but the real story is in the stunts. He once held a Guinness World Record for staging 20 protests in 24 hours; he walked 724km the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank; he started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale; and he's sued the police and won three times. The critics have had their say too: Clownster called him a 'firebrand of a clown', The Scotsman named him 'one of Britain's greatest storytellers', and Theatre Cat described him as 'the most intelligent of the modern leftist stand-ups', with all three praising the ratio of hard-hitting matter to mirth.
