Live dub and reggae gig by Gentleman's Dub Club, the Leeds band that bridges traditional roots reggae and modern bass music.
Gentleman's Dub Club play Cambridge Junction on Thursday 12 November, a standing show in the J1 room. It's a dub and reggae gig, and they're the only name on the bill.
They've been around for two decades now, having started in Leeds in 2006 as an eight-piece ensemble rehearsing in a Headingley basement. They grew out of sound system culture, taking their cues from the Iration Steppas and the long-running SubDub nights in Leeds, and eventually worked their way into an internationally touring outfit. Since those early days, they've put out seven studio albums, and their live set sits somewhere between traditional roots reggae and modern bass music. They've played to crowds of 10,000 or more across the UK and Europe, headlined festivals, opened the main stage at Boomtown to nearly 100,000 people, and toured supporting UB40.
Their biggest champion is David Rodigan MBE, who called them 'one of the most energetic and exciting live bands in the country', and their music has been a staple on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, played by Don Letts, Huw Stephens and Mistajam. That sound—rooted in the heavy bass of the sound system tradition but built for a live stage—is what they'll be bringing to the J1.
