Drink & Draw

Karin Eklund is leading a Drink & Draw at Hot Numbers Coffee on Tuesday 20 October, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. It's a straightforward setup: you bring your own drawing gear, grab a drink, and spend the evening sketching alongside everyone else in the room. The whole thing runs for two hours, so there's plenty of time to settle in without it becoming a marathon.

Eklund is an illustrator, and she'll be running the session with an open theme. That means there isn't one single thing everyone has to draw; you can take it in your own direction. To keep things moving, she'll be throwing out prompts throughout the night — little sparks to get you thinking if you hit a wall or just want to try something different from what you've got on the page. It's a good way to work without the pressure of having to come up with your own starting point.

Because it's an open theme, it works whether you're someone who likes to stick with one subject for the full two hours or someone who prefers to jump around. The prompts act as a safety net rather than a strict brief, so you can follow them as closely as you like or just use them as a loose suggestion. If you're used to drawing on your own, it's a bit different to have someone else setting the pace for the evening.

The session is at Hot Numbers Coffee (Dales Brewery) on Gwydir Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QA. It runs from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday 20 October, so you'll be done by half-past eight.
