Student-written freshers musical by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society, welcoming newcomers to the city's musical theatre scene.
CUMTS are back at the ADC Theatre on Wednesday 18 November with their annual Freshers Musical. It's a bit of a Cambridge tradition: every year, the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society brings together a group of freshers in their first term and puts them through the process of staging a student-written show, with the wider student musical theatre community on hand to help and oversee the whole thing. The society bills it as a showcase of fresh, new talent on the CUMTS calendar, and it's meant as a welcome for musical theatre newcomers to the city.
For this edition, the music is credited to Daisy Webb, Jake Moss and Ben Chang. It's a student-written production, so the songs come from within the university rather than from a professional West End or Broadway catalogue. The whole thing is put on by the students themselves, from the writing to the performing.
The venue is the ADC Theatre on Park Street, one of the smallest departments of the University of Cambridge and the oldest university playhouse in the country, with plays on the site since 1855. It's the centre of university drama in Cambridge, run almost entirely by students with no faculty involvement, and it's helped launch the careers of Sir Ian McKellen, Rachel Weisz and Emma Thompson. Resident student companies include the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club, the Cambridge Footlights, CUMTS and the Fletcher Players.
