Improv comedy show where a gothic horror story is cobbled together from the audience's suggestions, with live piano and sound effects.
Creature From The Unknown comes to Cambridge Junction on Friday 30 October, a night that puts gothic horror and improv comedy in the same room. It's a show built on the fly from the audience's suggestions, set on dimly lit Victorian streets and populated by gentlemen, ladies and the occasional cockney street urchin. The whole thing is watched over by a lurking being described only as 'TBC' — a vampire, a were-pig or a living Tickle-Me-Elmo? It's up to the night to decide.
The show draws on the gothic horrors of the 1800s and the monster movies of early Hollywood, with live scoring from a resident pianist and dynamic sound effects to keep the atmosphere going. Because it's improv, the plot is cobbled together from what the room throws at them, so no two nights end up the same.
Behind it is Creature Comedy, a Cambridge collective of improvisers whose members have worked with groups like Cambridge Improv Factory, The Cambridge School Of Improv, The Workplace and The Cambridge Impronauts. Penelope Saunders of East Midlands Theatre described every member of the group as 'a threat to any audience member determined to have a bad time'.
