A participatory project bringing together writing and photography created by people in prison, exhibited at Arnolfini as part of the Bristol Photo Festival.
The Prison Mobile Library opens at Arnolfini on 31 October and runs until 7 February, a participatory project that brings together writing and photography created by people in prison. It's a collaboration between those inside and the Bristol-based visual arts organisation IC Visual Lab, and the work is exhibited here in the city.
It's part of the Bristol Photo Festival's Time Machine edition, an international biennial of contemporary photography managed, curated and produced by IC Visual Lab. The festival asks how we inhabit layered time, turning to overlooked histories, shared rituals and imagined futures, and treats photography as a space where memory, fiction and possibility coexist. The Time Machine theme runs across the whole festival, and this exhibition is one of the pieces that fits into it.
To give you a sense of the scale, the festival's second edition in 2024 drew more than 115,000 visitors across 14 exhibitions staged in museums, galleries and independent spaces across Bristol. This year's edition continues that city-wide approach, with The Prison Mobile Library taking its place at Arnolfini.

It opens on 31 October and stays on until 7 February, so you've plenty of time to catch it over the winter. If you're around the harbour, it's a good one to keep on your radar.
