Joy Gregory discusses her exhibition Catching Flies with Honey with curator and writer Gilane Tawadros.
Joy Gregory and Gilane Tawadros are in conversation at Arnolfini on Thursday 3 December, as part of Gregory's exhibition Catching Flies with Honey, which runs from 17 October 2026 to 7 February 2027. The two will sit down to talk through the show, so it's a good chance to hear the artist speak about the work in person while the exhibition is still on.
Joy Gregory (b. 1959, UK) studied at Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. Her practice works across video, digital and analogue photography and Victorian print processes, and she takes in social and political issues and cultural differences. In 2002, she was awarded a NESTA Fellowship, which led to the video piece Gomera, which premiered at the Sydney Biennale in May 2010. Her work is held in the UK Arts Council Collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and the Yale British Art Collection.
Gilane Tawadros is the Director of Whitechapel Gallery in London's East End, former Chief Executive of DACS and Co-Director of the Art360 Foundation, which she founded in 2016 with Mark Waugh. She was also the founding Director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva). She was the first art historian appointed to the Blanche, Edith and Irving Laurie Chair in Women's Studies at Rutgers and chairs the Stuart Hall Foundation.

The conversation is one of the events running alongside Catching Flies with Honey, so if you've already seen the exhibition, this is a way to go back and hear it discussed; if you haven't, it's a good place to start. The exhibition itself stays open until 7 February 2027, so there's plenty of time to see the work before and after the talk.
