A drop-in workshop run by Latinas in Bristol celebrating Dia de los Muertos with face painting, paper flower making and a dance performance.
Latinas in Bristol are hosting a Dia de los Muertos workshop at Arnolfini on Sunday 1 November, a drop-in session celebrating the South American festival. It's a hands-on afternoon: you can get your face painted, make paper flower garlands, and help decorate a community altar for ofrendas. There's a dance performance to wrap things up, too.
The session is run by Latinas in Bristol, an organisation that works to improve the lives of Latin American women in the city. As an ethnic minority community, the group helps its members connect and support one another, and its space is explicitly bisexual, lesbian, queer and trans-inclusive, welcoming Latin American women of all ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, social classes and religions. Dia de los Muertos is a South American festival, and the workshop brings its traditions into the city for anyone to join in.
It's a drop-in, so you don't need to commit to the whole day. There are two windows to pop in: 11:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:00, with a break in between. All ages are welcome, so it works as a family thing as much as a solo visit. You can spend half an hour on the face painting and head off, or stay and help build the altar. The dance performance comes at the end, once the decorating is done.
