Wasabi

Wasabi play The Rossi Bar on Thursday 8 October, with support from Brighton's own Darcy and Blitzer. The night is presented by Don't Tell, and the bill brings together a London four-piece with two local acts from the south coast.

Wasabi are an art rock and shoegaze band based in London. Their sound draws on a wide spread of influences: the ethereal, layered textures of Cocteau Twins, the jagged, spoken-word delivery of King Krule, the glitchy, beat-driven shoegaze of Sweet Trip, and the jazz-inflected guitar work of Mansur Brown. It's a mix that pulls from a few different corners of indie and experimental music, so you'll hear the dreamier side of shoegaze sitting alongside more angular, rhythmic art rock.

Opening the night are two Brighton bands. Darcy is an emerging 'grungegaze' outfit, a name that does exactly what it says on the tin: the heavy, distorted weight of grunge meeting the washed-out, hazy walls of sound from shoegaze. Blitzer is a post-punk trio whose aesthetic is inspired by the Cold War in the 1980s, and East Berlin's architecture and imagery in particular. Their sound takes in early 80s post-punk and new wave, and they cite Echo & The Bunnymen, The Birthday Party, Buzzcocks and Public Image Limited as influences — names that place them firmly in the starker, more driving end of the post-punk tradition.

Between the three, the bill runs from the dreamier, textural side of shoegaze through to the heavier grunge-inflected stuff and over to the sharp, angular lines of post-punk. It's a fair bit of ground to cover in one evening, and the two support acts are both local to the south coast. The show starts at 7.30pm at The Rossi Bar, 8 Queens Rd, BN1 3WA, and tickets are £5.
