Educational sessions comparing suitcase turntables with hi-fi systems to improve vinyl listening experiences and record care.
If you have recently started collecting vinyl or are thinking about picking up your first turntable, you might have noticed how many of those popular suitcase-style players are on the market. They look convenient, but there is often a gap between how they perform and what a proper hi-fi setup can actually do for your records. On May 30, 2026, Audio T in Brighton is hosting an event called Turntable Sessions: Ditch the Suitcase!, which aims to break down these differences in a straightforward, beginner-friendly way.

The sessions are designed to be practical rather than technical. The organisers will be running live A/B comparisons, playing the same music on a suitcase player and then on a properly configured hi-fi system. The goal is to show how different equipment affects the sound quality and, perhaps more importantly, how the heavier tracking force and basic cartridges found on entry-level suitcase players can potentially wear down your records over time. They will also cover the basics of record care, including how to manage dust, static, and general residue, which is useful information if you are just starting to build a collection.
These sessions are held in small groups, lasting about an hour and a half each, with start times at 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00. It is a relaxed environment where you are encouraged to ask questions, and you are even welcome to bring along your own records to hear how they sound on different setups. While the event is free to attend, you do need to book your place in advance as capacity is limited. The venue is located at 69 London Road, BN1 4JE, and doors open at 10:00 am. Please note that the event is open to anyone aged 14 and over, though those under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult.
