Reggae night featuring Tippa Irie, Coxsone Sound, Earl 16 and other reggae artists at the Volks Club.
Tippa Irie is playing The Volks on Saturday 21 November, with Coxsone, Earl 16 and a full sound system line-up. It's a proper reggae session, and the bill runs deep: Tippa Irie, Coxsone Sound, Earl 16, MC Brother, Culture, Heavytone, HI-FI, Dende Sound, Ites and Vibration. With that many sounds and MCs on one bill, it's more of a day-long session than a standard gig.
If you're not familiar with Tippa Irie, he's a Brixton-born singer and DJ who first made his name in the early eighties as an MC on Saxon Studio International, the South London sound system that helped launch Maxi Priest, Papa Levi and Smiley Culture. He was part of the new generation of British MCs who developed the 'fast talking' chat style that later turned up in the work of rappers like Busta Rhymes. Throughout the eighties, he toured extensively with his long-time sparring partner Pato Banton, and that run included a slot at Jamaica's Reggae Sunsplash.
Since then, he's put out fifteen albums and a string of hits, including 'Hello Darling', 'Raggamuffin Girl', 'Stress', 'Superwoman' and 'Shouting for the Gunners', which he recorded for the Arsenal football team and which reached the Top 30 of the British pop charts. He also picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song for his collaboration with Black Eyed Peas' Will-I-Am on 'Hey Mama'.
