The Philadelphia punk band Poison Ruin present their new album Hymns From the Hills, with support from Joy.
Poison Ruïn play The Volks Club on Wednesday 18 November, presented by Joy. They're a punk band from Philadelphia, and the night is built around their new album, Hymns From the Hills.
It's a record that's already gathered a fair bit of critical attention, and it's the main thing they're touring. The set will lean on it, so it's a good chance to hear the new material live rather than just on the record. They're not a band that stays in one place for long, and Hymns From the Hills is the latest turn in a career that's seen them move in a few different directions over the years.
They describe their own sound as grim mythmaking and scythe-swinging aggression, which gives you a decent idea of the territory they're working in. It's punk, but with a particular focus on the darker, more atmospheric side of things—the mythmaking part of that description points towards the stories they build into their songs, while the scythe-swinging aggression covers the heavier, more confrontational side. The two sit side by side, and Hymns From the Hills continues that approach.

On the night, Poison Ruïn are supported by Joy, who are also presenting the show. The Volks Club is at 3 Madeira Drive, BN2 1PS, right on the seafront. It's an 18+ event, and tickets start from £15. Doors are at 7:00 pm.
