A special talk on industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle and COUM Transmissions, part of the Sound Affects series.
East Street Tap hosts a special talk on Throbbing Gristle on Sunday 1 November, part of the Sound Affects series. It's a session devoted to the industrial music pioneers and their proto-punk agitators COUM Transmissions, and it marks 50 years since the band's infamous PROSTITUTION show at the ICA in October 1976. That one night sparked a tabloid backlash and condemnation in Parliament from Conservative MP Nicholas Fairbairn, who labelled them the 'wreckers of civilisation'.
Sound Affects is a monthly series of talks about music and subcultures organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft, which explores how sound affects us. This particular evening focuses on the early years of Throbbing Gristle and the COUM Transmissions that came before them.
The guests bring a direct connection to that world. Foxtrot Echo was a principal member of COUM Transmissions alongside Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, and has led the COUM satellite COUM Flakes since 1973. Matthew Levi Stevens is an author, occultural commentator and Enochian & Hermetic magical practitioner who, from 1982, was an active participant in London Occulture through friendships with Genesis P-Orridge and the members of Coil. Between them, they cover the band's origins in COUM Transmissions and the later occult circles that grew around its members.
