A night of talks about music and subcultures, organised and hosted by Jak Hutchcraft, with guest speakers Michael Cragg, Wildblood & Queenie and Richard Evans.
Sound Affects #44 comes to East Street Tap on Wednesday 4 November, with Wildblood & Queenie, Richard Evans, and Michael Cragg on the bill. It's the latest in a series of nights about music and subcultures, hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. The whole thing is built around the idea of how sound affects us and how music changes the world, and it draws on personal stories and fan communities rather than just a list of dates and names.
Michael Cragg has written about pop music for more than a decade. His book Reach for the Stars: 1996-2006 won the 2024 Penderyn Music Book Prize, and he'll be talking about his new title, Can't Get You Out of My Head: In Search of Kylie. Beside him are the DJ duo Wildblood & Queenie, who are celebrating three decades and still broadcasting their 101.4FM 1BTN Radio Show. Richard Evans is a three-decade music industry veteran; his 2023 book Listening to the Music the Machines Make is one part of the conversation, and his new book Looking Backwards Towards the Future: The Story of Ultravox is the band's first authorised biography.
Between them, that's a lot of ground to cover in one evening: a decade-spanning look at pop, a long-running radio show, and two books from a career in the industry, one on the machines that make the music and another on the history of Ultravox. It's a talky night rather than a gig, so the focus is on the stories and the thinking behind the records.
