A theatre piece exploring the cutthroat world of professional cycling and doping in 1991, following a young rider who struggles to stay true to his principles.
The Thousand Days runs at The Actors Pub in Kemptown on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 November, with both performances starting at 19:00 and running until 22:00. It's a two-night run, so you've got a choice of evening.
The play is set in the world of professional cycling. It follows David, an aspiring young rider who joins a pro team in 1991 and finds himself in a brutal, cutthroat environment of secrets and lies. From there, it becomes a story about a rider trying to stay true to his principles in a sport where doping is endemic. As the older riders retire, get banned, or even die, new young riders hungry for success at any price step in to take their place.
It's a look at the cycle of the sport itself — the way the system replaces one generation with the next, and the pressure that pushes people to cross lines they'd rather not. If you've ever followed the cycling world, the 1991 setting will ring a bell; it was an era when the culture of doping was deeply embedded, and the play doesn't shy away from that.
