Hydrocracker are bringing The Signalman to the Cab Road Tunnel from 15 October to 8 November, a staged adaptation of Charles Dickens' ghost story performed inside an abandoned railway tunnel beneath Brighton Station. It's a new version of the story, adapted by Jonathan Holloway, co-directed by Nathan Crossan-Smith and Richard Halo, and starring Jem Wall (Steve McQueen's Blitz, Star Wars: Andor) and Oliver Clayton (Black Doves, Netflix), with sound design by Matt Huxley. The production is suitable for 14+.
If you've come across Hydrocracker before, you'll know they're a company that likes to put on shows in some of Brighton's more unusual spots. They've done sell-out runs in iconic locations across the city, including Erpingham Camp on Brighton Pier and The New World Order in Brighton Town Hall, so taking a Dickens ghost story into a disused tunnel under the station fits right in with how they work. The venue itself is part of the experience here: the story is set around a railway signalman, and you'll be watching it inside an actual abandoned tunnel beneath the tracks.
