A woman-led sapphic gothic horror reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula, written and directed by Alivia Arief, blending feminine rage with Lynchian dreams.
The Servant, Dracula comes to The Actors Theatre on Friday 16 October, part of Brighton's Halloween season. It's a brand-new stage adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic, written and directed by Alivia Arief, who also takes the helm on the production. The show is billed as a 'sapphic occult horror' that blends feminine rage with Lynchian dreams, and it celebrates the feminine and the queer.
Rather than sticking to the gothic tropes of the original, Arief puts the internal lives of the characters at the centre. The production touches on grief, mental illness and loss, turning those internal horrors into the show's main engine. It's aimed squarely at fans of Hammer Horror, the modern gothic revival and the work of the late David Lynch, so if you're into that particular mix of the macabre and the surreal, this is right up your street.
On stage, Lucy Kendrick-Goss and Dan Skinner lead the cast, with Kato Thomas, Rosa Sweeting and Celeste Mireya handling stage, sound and costume respectively. Gabriel Magill produces. The production sold out its previous showing, so it's worth getting your tickets in early if you're planning to go.
