New Orleans traditional jazz with hip hop and rap influences, signed to Tru Thoughts, live at The Hare & Hounds.
The Hot 8 Brass Band play The Hare & Hounds on Thursday 30 July, with the music starting at 19:30. It's a single-act bill, so they're the only name on the night.
If you're not familiar with them, the sound is New Orleans traditional jazz shot through with hip hop and rap. It's a brass band at its core, but they bring in the rap and the hip hop beats rather than sticking to the trad side of things. They're signed to Tru Thoughts, the Brighton-based label, so they're a familiar name around here.
That New Orleans root is the foundation — the brass band setup, the swing, the tradition — and the hip hop and rap are woven right into it, not just tacked on. It's a crossover that works best when you hear it live, and that's exactly what they'll be doing at The Hare & Hounds. If you've got a thing for brass and a thing for rap, this is where those two meet.
