Performance by award-winning British multi-instrumentalist duo Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington.
The Blackheart Orchestra play Railway Inn, Platform 1, on Saturday 6 March. It's a two-person outfit — Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington — who describe themselves as a two-person orchestra, and they're not exaggerating: they play up to 13 instruments across a single show.
Their sound pulls from a wide spread of influences. On one end you've got the art-rock of Pink Floyd and Kate Bush; on the other, the minimalist compositions of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. It's that crossing of paths — the melodic, song-led side of things meeting the more structured, repetitive textures of modern classical — that gives their work its particular shape. The recent single 'Bloodlines' reached number 19 in the UK, and BBC 6 Music called it "intensely beautiful."
Their last two albums both hit the Top 20, with Hotel Utopia charting at number 13 in the UK. That one picked up Best British Album, Best Song, and Best Female Vocalist at the USA Progressive Rock Awards, and the duo currently sits on six Best Albums of the year lists across the UK. Between the two of them, they're multi-award winning multi-instrumentalists, and the live show is built around that versatility — switching between instruments throughout the set rather than sticking to one setup.
