An afternoon of talks by artist Anna Dumitriu and ecologists from The Living Coast and the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival about art, science and nature, part of Dreamy Place 2026.
Talking of Nature... comes to The Old Market on Sunday 25 October, an afternoon of talks that brings together artists, ecologists and people working to connect communities with their local environments. It's part of Dreamy Place 2026, and the session runs from 14:00 to 16:30, with doors opening at 13:30.
The afternoon is built around talks and conversations, with speakers exploring how artistic practice and scientific research can reveal hidden ecologies and new ways of experiencing nature, drawing on both local and international perspectives. The line-up brings together three very different voices: artist Anna Dumitriu, Ed Santry from The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere, and Martha Henson, who runs the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival.
Dumitriu is a British contemporary artist and a pioneer of art-science collaborative practice, widely considered the first artist to create work using CRISPR DNA modification techniques. Her Algologies project came out of the Fabrica - Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere Residency in 2021 and later inspired the Black Rock Beachcombers sculptures, which were installed on Brighton's East Beach in 2024. The Living Coast has been a UNESCO Biosphere since 2014 and is the only one in the UK to include a large urban area. Henson's Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival is a grassroots event where, as she puts it, "nature is the headline act" — it was listed by the Guardian among the ten best nature festivals in the UK.
