A guided foraging course in Stanmer Park learning to identify wild edible plants and mushrooms, including refreshments and a final meal.
If you have ever walked through Stanmer Park and wondered which of the plants lining the paths are actually edible, you might be interested in the Summer Foraging Course happening on June 28, 2026. Organised by Wild Food UK, this session takes place at One Garden Brighton and is designed to help people identify both wild edible plants and mushrooms, while also learning how to spot the poisonous ones.

The course runs for about three and a half hours, typically starting at 12:00 and wrapping up around 15:30 or 16:00. It begins with an introduction to the codes of conduct for foraging, which is useful if you are new to the practice. From there, the group heads out on a guided walk. Throughout the afternoon, there are refreshments provided—expect things like wild garlic and hogweed soup or elderflower champagne—and the day concludes with a meal featuring homemade dishes prepared by the instructor, incorporating some of the items gathered during the walk. A few days after the event, participants receive course notes via email, which is helpful for remembering what you have learned.
Regarding the logistics, the event is open to the general public and families are welcome. The pricing is set at £60.00 for a standard ticket, while those under 16 pay £30.00. Children under 12 can attend for free, though you need to let the organisers know in advance so they can arrange the catering accordingly. Since the course involves spending the afternoon outdoors, it is worth dressing for the weather and wearing appropriate footwear. You will also need to bring a few personal items: a cup for the refreshments, a plate and cutlery for the final meal, some water, and perhaps a camera or a notebook if you want to document the plants you find. The venue itself is well-equipped with toilets and a café, so you have those facilities on hand if needed.
