Stories with Skip is back at Theatre Royal Brighton on Saturday 3 October, the children's programme that's built around the theatre's own workshop leader and mascot, Skip the mouse. Each session follows a different theme and is staged inside the theatre itself, so the little ones aren't just sitting in the stalls — they get to explore the room, touch and play with things, and make a mini craft before settling into a cosy lounge to hear a story. It's a gentle way to get them used to the space, and the programme is best suited for ages 2.5 to 4.
There's something quite lovely about the setting. The Theatre Royal is a Grade II* listed building on New Road, and it's been entertaining audiences for more than 218 years, making it one of the oldest theatres in the country. For a toddler, that's a lot of history to wander through, and the whole session is described as a perfect introduction to the house for small children. It's less about sitting still and more about letting them get a feel for the place.
