A practical workshop to create a custom stained glass piece, learning cutting, copper foil and soldering techniques in a garden studio.
Ruth Summers is running a stained glass taster workshop at Blue Skies Glass Studio in Brighton, and if you've ever wanted to try it without committing to a full course, this is a good place to start. It's a half-day session where you make your own piece of stained glass from scratch — either a suncatcher or a small panel — and take it home with you when you're done.
The studio is a garden workshop, and the session is designed for absolute beginners, so you don't need any prior experience to get stuck in. You'll be guided through the three main stages of the process: cutting the glass to size, wrapping the edges in copper foil, and soldering the pieces together to hold the whole thing in place. Ruth talks you through each step, so you're not just left to figure it out on your own. When it comes to the design, you can pick from a few pre-drawn patterns if you're not sure where to start, or bring your own idea and work from that instead.
It's a hands-on morning or afternoon, and everything you need is provided on the day — all the glass, the tools, and the materials are included in the price, so you just have to turn up. There's tea and coffee on hand too, which is a nice touch when you're spending a few hours focused on one piece. It's aimed at adults, and you'll need to be at least 16 to take part.

Booking is for a half-day taster, and it's a paid session: £90 for one person, £150 for two, or £210 for three, so it's worth grabbing a friend or two to bring the cost down. You'll leave with your finished piece in hand.
