Live rock performance by the Canadian duo SoftCult, featuring twin sisters Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn, at the Zahara venue in Brighton.
Softcult play Zahara on Monday 14 December, with the set starting at 19:00. The band is a rock duo made up of twin sisters Phoenix (she/they) and Mercedes Arn-Horn (she/her), who come from Kitchener, Ontario, and have been making music together since they were barely teenagers.
They started out recording at home, with Phoenix producing and Mercedes directing their music videos. Their debut single carried the line 'something's got to change', a nod to the sexism they encountered in their local scene and the wider music industry. They began releasing single tracks in early 2021, and put out their first EP, Year of the Rat, that same year.
Their sound draws from a broad range of influences. They cite Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna as a primary one, alongside the heavier, wall-of-sound textures of The Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones and My Bloody Valentine. They also point to the 'bubble grunge' of Beabadoobee, Cherry Glazer and Soccer Mommy, and they position themselves as a fiercely modern act. It's a mix that sits somewhere between the grit of 90s alt-rock and the brighter, more melodic side of recent indie.
