A short form improv comedy show by the Brighton-based troupe ShortForMania, combining sketch and long form improv.
ShortForMania are back at The Yellow Book on Saturday 25 July with If This Show Doesn't Kill You Then We Will, a night of short-form improv in Brighton. They're a local troupe that doesn't stick to one format: the show mixes short-form games, long-form scenes, and sketch, with whatever else they're feeling that month thrown in. It's the kind of thing that changes from night to night, so you're seeing something that won't be repeated exactly the same way again.
They describe themselves as Brighton's only improv team — with a fair bit of irony — and the whole thing is built on the fly, with the audience usually providing the prompts that set the scenes in motion. The result is a mix of quick-fire games and longer, more developed bits, all made up on the spot. They pitch it as smart, relevant comedy performed by people they describe as 'very friendly and strange', and it's aimed at an adult crowd that enjoys improv and a good laugh.
If you're actually interested in how it works, there's more to it than just the show. The team runs a monthly workshop called Advanced Improv for Everyone on the same day, led by founder Roneesh Vashisht, who spent eight years doing improv in Chicago. It's for people who've already had at least one improv class, so it's a step up rather than a starting point.
