A four-week open studio residency by digital artist Caroline Beavon, featuring live making, interactive installations, and public engagement sessions at Mid Street Lab. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 9–11am and 3–6pm.
Caroline Beavon takes over Mid Street Lab in Kemptown for a four-week open studio residency called PLAY/RECORD, running from 22 July to 14 August. Beavon is a Brighton-based digital artist, and the whole point of the residency is to work in public rather than behind closed doors. The studio stays open throughout, so you can drop in, watch her work, ask questions and see how she builds her pieces from the ground up.
What she's working on is a set of new interactive and 'scrollytelling' works — stories you navigate by scrolling — developed right there in the room. The process mixes digital and analogue: she starts with hand-drawn sketches, then digitises, animates and layers them with found materials to build the interactive narratives. Because it's an open studio, you get to see the messy middle — the sketches and the layering — rather than just the finished result.
Alongside the daily work, there are three ticketed events. PLAY is an open session for artists who feel a bit nervous about the digital side of things; RECORD is a public testing and feedback session where you can see work in progress and have your say; and RWD/FFWD is the closing showcase that brings it all together. Between those, the studio remains open for anyone to pop in and watch the process unfold.
