Open-air, site-specific photographic performance and exhibition by Dr Eva Kalpadaki, part of the Brighton Photo Fringe 2026 Festival.
Dr Eva Kalpadaki is bringing SA TA NA MA to the Brighton Seafront as part of the Brighton Photo Fringe 2026 Festival, and it's an outdoor exhibition that's as much about the process as the final images. The work grew out of her own practice of meditating by the sea, which she says helped her keep her inner balance during the pandemic. It's a site-specific piece, so it's tied directly to the spot where it was made.
The performance itself is something you won't actually see. For eleven minutes, Kalpadaki practises the Kundalini Yoga meditation SA TA NA MA facing the water, while a camera, programmed to take one photograph every minute, records the changing light and movement without her intervention. A twelfth minute of silence follows, which means no image ever occupies the final position. Each frame keeps the same composition, with the sky and the sea dividing it into equal halves. The camera acts as witness and technological mediator, capturing a sequence of moments that would otherwise go unnoticed.
She then brings those images back to the seafront where they were taken, inviting you into a visual meditation on presence, change, impermanence and the spiritual connection between humans and nature. It's a quiet, slow-moving piece of work that asks you to stop and look at the same view over and over, noticing the small shifts in light and tide that happen when you're just sitting still.
